Internet Security problems

I just read an article about someone hacked into Ebay (more than once, actually). You can read about it here: http://blog.imagestr.com/?p=40

I think something like this just serves to remind us that while technology has its uses, it also has it's problems. Ebay is a very popular site and with all the money being exchanged, it must maintain its security. If something this big can be compromised, other larger institutions can be too. I think it's important that everyone who uses technology learns about the security issues that come with it.

Micheal,

I actually wrote an article on something similar this past semester. I recieved an e-mail asking me to confirm some bank information (it had the Bank of America logo, looked official enough, right?) and after entering my social security, account number, name, address, etc, etc, found out it was a "phishing scam." Something similar happened to one of my sources with Ebay and PayPal. Thankfully, I was able to close my account in time and put a flag in my credit reports, but who knows what could have happened if it took me any longer to realize what had happened.

Take a look at my article. There's some interesting information and tips.

I attended a conference over the weekend and one panel discussed Web 2.0 and the evolution of the Internet as we know it. They talked about ebay's success as contingent on user trust. I think this is a really good point--we take a lot of net security for granted.

It is absolutely terrifying doing business with any company online. There are so many people now who spend their days just hacking into systems for money. My grandmother gets these emails constantly from con artists asking her to provide all of her personal information! There needs to be more security regarding web transactions.
